We started the week thinking about how we are all different and how this makes us special and unique. We celebrated our differences by wearing odd socks on Monday for Odd Sock Day. We thought about how people can say unkind things to others for being different, how this makes us feel and what we could do to be kind and show respect to all. The children have been amazing all week by praising each other for our achievements and congradulating everone when they recieve a dojo point.

Phonics

In phonics this week the children have been learning split vowel diagraphs - a-e (ai), i-e (igh), o-e (oa) and u-e (oo or yoo). Examples of these words are time, home, make cube, rule. Please practise these at home both reading and spelling different words contining these sounds.

English

In English this week we have been continuing our work on Remembrance Day. We thought about what it means and came up with a list of nouns (name of a thing/object/etc) to do with Remembrance Day. The children also learnt a new word verb. We learnt that a verb is an action or doing word such as clap, cry, jump, throw, play. We again made a list of different verbs and continued our learning by adding the suffix ing to our verbs.

We read a Remembrance Day poem and used our knowledge of nouns and verbs to create our own poems (see gallery for the children poems). We decorated and performed our poems to the rest of the class.

Maths

This week in Maths the children have learnt about the term subtraction and how to write the symbol. We continued to use the part part whole model to assist us in working out a simple subtraction. We learnt how we start with the whole number when subtraction and take away one of the parts. We also learnt about the fact families and how using the same whole number and two parts to make 4 different number sentences eg

2+3=5

3+2=5

5-2=3

5-3=2

The children also learnt how to cross out a part of an amount to get the answer. We have been thinking about giving reason to our answer and explaining how to do something to a partner or adult to help in our understanding.

History

We learnt about the facts of Remembrance Day and why it is important to help us to generate a list of nouns to use in our English lessons.

Science

We have continued to learn about the weather and the four seasons and what things happen happen in each season.

PE

In PE with have continued to work with the sports coach Bryn and we have also been developing our balls skills , throwing and catching with a partner and on our owns.

RE

Last weekend it was the Hindu festival of light known as Diwali which is a very speical time to people of that faith. We talked about how we don't celebrate that faith but we still show respect to everone for their different beliefs and how by doing this it makes us kinder people.

We learnt about the facts of Diwali and why it is a special time for Hindus. The children had lots of creative fun taking part in different art and design activities associated with Diwali.

Music

The year ones have been working together to learn their songs for the Christmas performance and take any opportunity to burst into song.

On Friday 17th November the children came to school dressed in non-uniform for Children in Need. The children thought about why it is good to give to charity and how we feel when we do something kind for others. The children enjoyed taking part in lots of activities with a Pudsey bear theme.
